Privacy Policy

Stargazer is a local-first macOS app. Your library of starred repositories, tags, projects, and notes lives on your Mac, not on our servers. This policy explains the little data that does leave your device and why.

What stays on your device

Everything you create in Stargazer is stored in a local SQLite database on your Mac. We never receive, see, or store your stars, tags, projects, notes, or browsing history. You can export or delete this data at any time from the app.

GitHub sign-in

Signing in uses GitHub's OAuth Device Flow. Your GitHub access token is stored in the macOS Keychain and is never written to our servers or the app's database. Stargazer uses it locally to fetch your starred repositories and public repository data directly from GitHub's API.

License verification

To unlock the app (trial or purchase), Stargazer sends your GitHub token once to our license server so we can confirm the account it belongs to. We do not store the token. We only record your numeric GitHub account id and username to link your license or trial to your account, and the date your trial started. The server returns a signed license that your app can then verify offline.

Payments

Purchases are handled by Polar, our Merchant of Record. Your payment details are processed by Polar and their payment partners under their privacy policy; Stargazer never receives your card information. At checkout you provide the GitHub username your license binds to.

AI assistant (optional)

The AI features are off until you enable them. When enabled, your questions and the relevant repository context are sent to the model provider you choose: either any ChatGPT-compatible API (using your own key) or a local model server on your machine. Stargazer does not run its own AI service and does not receive your prompts. Your API key is stored in the macOS Keychain.

Updates

Stargazer checks for new versions by fetching a small manifest from our public GitHub releases page. This is a standard web request and involves no personal data beyond what any web request includes (such as your IP address, visible to GitHub).

Analytics and tracking

Stargazer contains no analytics, telemetry, ad networks, or third-party trackers. We do not build a profile of you.

Your rights

Because your content never leaves your device, you are always in control of it. To delete the limited license record tied to your GitHub id, or for any privacy question, contact us at [email protected].
